Yelp is making it easier for users to find business with gender-neutral bathrooms, the company announced today. Starting today, a yes/no on gender-neutral restrooms will now show up as yet another attribute about a business you’re looking at. “What constitutes a gender neutral restroom, you ask? Gender neutral restrooms are accessible to persons of any gender and are a locking, single-stall bathroom,” said Rachel Williams, It’s head of diversity and inclusion, in a blog post. In the next few weeks, you’ll be able to filter business to display only those with a gender-neutral bathroom, if you wish. The app will soon begin asking users who check into locations with the app whether or not they have access to gender-neutral restrooms. Business owners can also update their own listings with the info. It is among the dozens of tech companies that yesterday filed an amicus brief in support of Gavin Grimm, a trans student who is currently involved in a United States Supreme Court case over bathroom access. “At Yelp we thrive on inclusion and acceptance, and we hope that our support for Gavin’s case and the addition of this new business attribute will help our friends in the LGBTQQIA community,” Williams said.
It was founded in 2004 to help people find great local businesses like dentists, hair stylists and mechanics. It had a monthly average of 24 million unique visitors who visited it via the app and 65 million unique visitors who visited via mobile web in Q4 2016. Yelpers have written more than 121 million reviews by the end of Q4 2016. In addition to reviews, you can use it to find events, lists and to talk with other Yelpers. Every business owner (or manager) can setup a free account to post photos and message their customers. Yelp makes money by selling ads to local businesses – you’ll see these clearly labeled “Yelp Ads” around the site. Paying advertisers can never change or re-order their reviews. Yelp uses automated software to recommend the most helpful and reliable reviews for the Yelp community among the millions we get. The software looks at dozens of different signals, including various measures of quality, reliability, and activity on Yelp. The process has nothing to do with whether a business advertises on Yelp or not. You can access Yelp via iPhone, Android, and more – see the full list of mobile apps. The Local Yelp brings locals updates on the latest and greatest business openings & other happenings.
