WhatsApp to stop running on Windows and BlackBerry OS from December 31

WhatsApp has announced that they are discontinuing older smartphone OSs including Windows Phone and BlackBerry OS from the next year. The popular messaging app will stop running on Windows and BlackBerry platforms from December 31st. From 1 January 2018, the app will not be working on older smartphones running on the above mentioned platforms.

According to official statement, the app will not be able to work on the handsets running on Windows Phone 8.0 or its older versions, BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10. The giant has updated their past blog post by adding the above words of stopping the support for older smartphone platforms.

The update reads, “When we started WhatsApp in 2009, people’s use of mobile devices looked very different from today. The Apple App Store was only a few months old. About 70 percent of smartphones sold at the time had operating systems offered by BlackBerry and Nokia.”

“Mobile operating systems offered by Google, Apple and Microsoft – which account for 99.5 percent of sales today – were on less than 25 percent of mobile devices sold at the time.”

So if you are using any of these platforms, unfortunately, the WhatsApp Messenger will not work on the handsets from January 1st, 2018.

Apart from this, the company has also mentioned the deadlines to work on older devices. The app will be available for Nokia’s Series 40 devices till December 31, 2018. On the other hand, it will be available for the Android 2.3.7 and older devices till February 1, 2020.

Since people are purchasing new phones and there are hundreds of new Android devices and other smartphones available at an affordable price tags, there are only a few users who are still stick to the older smartphones. It is hard for the developers to redesign the compatible version to work on these platforms which actually stopping them to productive something different. That’s the only reason why the giant has announced this yesterday in a blogpost.

The WhatsApp Messenger will still be available for the Nokia Series 40 smartphones and Android’s Older phones till the mentioned deadlines, the app will work absolutely fine on the device. However, the company has completely stopped working on the development for this app for these platforms so there will be no any update to this app available for these mentioned platforms in the future.

Since there will be no any update to this app for the older Smartphone platforms, some of the features of the app might stop working and not functioning properly on your device. So you have to deal with such issues as the company has already mentioned it in a blogpost.

WhatsApp has been providing regular updates for all the platforms and other non-popular platforms till date. However, everything has its limit. For that reason, we all have to support the decision which is taken by the giant recently.

The older devices do not have proper compatibilities to run and work on new features of the app. Older devices are unable to get you what the app has got in terms of its new features and for that very same reason, the messenger app is going to stop support the older platforms and on other incompatible devices in the future.

Indeed, this is a tough decision to make by the giant but to improve their productivity, they have to take such tough steps so they could develop something new for the future users. If your Android device is running on an older version, you can update your device with the new OS version to let the WhatsApp Messenger app functions properly on your device.
