WhatsApp launches research awards up to $50,000 to fight fake news

WhatsApp has become a huge community with over a Billion daily active users worldwide. Today, WhatsApp has announced they will work with industry experts and with the people who are good at researching issues on the platform. We all know that many people are spreading misinformation or we can say fake news on the platform. According to this new announcements, WhatsApp will tackle down this issue and for that, they are offering research awards up to $50,000. 

“WhatsApp cares deeply about the safety of our users. Through this new project, we look forward to working with leading academic experts in India to learn more about how online platforms are used to spread misinformation. This local research will help us build upon recent changes we have made within WhatsApp and support broad education to help people spot false news and hoaxes,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said.

“WhatsApp Research Awards for Social Science and Misinformation” this programme will fund researchers which will give methods to analyze the data which are being spread on the platform. WhatsApp has changed entirely after it was acquired by Facebook a few years back. Today, WhatsApp has become a daily part of everyone’s life.

To give proper safety and to secure the society, WhatsApp is taking this step which will protect the society from misinformation and fake news.

If we talk particularly about India, most fake news are related to politicians who are running IT cells to spread the fake news on the platform. Fake news and fake information are spreading very rapidly which is currently brainwashing the people of India. In order to stop users from spreading such fake news and information, WhatsApp has come up with this new way to stop this entirely.

WhatsApp has welcomed proposals of any social science who can get the insights and the impact of technology. This award will provide funding of $50,000 to individual researchers. “These are unrestricted monetary awards that offer investigators the freedom to deepen and extend their existing research portfolio,” says the company.

People who are interested to join this programme can send in their applications by August 12, 2018. The final results will be announced by September 15, 2018, for the candidates who have applied for the same.
