Imgur has disclosed something shocking to its users to this season of vacations. As per the new announcement, there were over 1.7 Million accounts’ password and email IDs were stolen in the year 2014 from Imgur’s accounts. The platform was hacked by hackers in the year 2014 as a security researchers came across this.

As per the reports, due to an old encryption system, the data of over 1.7 Million accounts were hacked in the year 2014. Imgur is a popular image-sharing site having millions of photographers who post their copyrighted images and work so people can contact them and can make a living out of it. The security breach which was happened in the year 2014, was recently discovered and people who use Imgur actively just came to know about this attack.

Imgur has over 150 million active monthly users who were affected by the hackers. Since the site doesn’t ask for your personal information while signing up, it didn’t reveal the personal information of the users and their accounts.

As per the data researchers, using brute force attack and old encryption system, were the reason behind the breach in the security system of Imgur’s personal accounts. The company has updated the algorighm last year with added security so your Imgur accounts are now completely safe from the hackers and other web attackers.

Imgur said in a statement, “While we are still actively investigating the intrusion, we wanted to inform you as quickly as possible as to what we know and what we are doing in response.”

Troy Hunt was running the data breach notification service and he has discovered plenty of things of the past year, 2014. As per his statement, “I disclosed this incident to Imgur late in the day in the midst of the US Thanksgiving holidays,” Hunt said. “That they could pick this up immediately, protect impacted accounts, notify individuals and prepare public statements in less than 24 hours is absolutely exemplary.”

In an official public closure, the company started resetting the older passwords of the users whose accounts were affected due to data breach in the past year. Users receive notification and they will be able to reset their passwords using the emails and more. Apart from Imgur, there were a few other popular giants who were also affected by the same data breach in their security systems.

Imgur’s chief operating officer Roy Sehgal has said that, the investigation is still running and they will soon come with the actual reason behind this data breach in the security system. However, they have completely improved the site security after noticing the hack.

As per the official statement, the company has changed its password system with bcrypt which is a much stronger password scrambler. The company has advised all the users to change the username and password of other accounts with the same data. So if you use Imgur’s username and password to other sites, you are requested to change them as soon as possible.

Well, as we have already mentioned above that the site doesn’t collect names, phone numbers or user’ personal addresses, you don’t need to worry about the data breach at all. The only information was stolen is user’s email addresses and password linked with the Imgur’s account.

Most of the users are frequently changing their usernames and password and hence they don’t need to worry about this at all. People who don’t change their passwords, are requested to kindly change the passwords more frequently and this is how they can keep all their accounts and its information secured from the hackers and other online attackers.

We would also request you to keep different passwords for different accounts of your social media networks and other platforms.
