In an interesting move, Pinterest has silently acquired half of the team at Fleksy, the custom keyboard app for iOS and Android. The team will now join Pinterest’s product engineering team. Acquisition of half of the team means that Fleksy will continue to be working as a standalone app which minimal updates in the time to come.
Fleksy had been launched as an iOS app in the beginning. It came around the time when Apple had first released its OS for the developers to develop keyboard. It did get a decent traction on Android as well, however, it could never match the hype of keyboard apps like SwiftKey, which later got acquired by Microsoft at a whooping $250 million.
Fleksy had raised a total amount of over $7 million, out of which the latest round of $2 million came in October last year when Apple had opened the keyboard for developers.
Once the acquisition is completed, the fleksy app will be made open source to give more flexibility to the developers in order to get what people really think and want from the app.
