First experience with Ello, the Ad free social Network

Internet is full of innovations and new ideas. Every single day, we can see some or the other new hing coming up. One such thing which has recently launched and making a lot of news recently is a social network called Ello. Let’s have a look at what Ello is and how is it different from the other social networks available currently.

Ello is around since a bit of time now. The social network came into news when it claimed to be Anti-Facebook and announced that the social network is completely Ad free, well, the official website has nowhere mentioned if the social network is going to be Ad free forever, so that becomes an interesting thing as the time progresses.

Landing onto Ello does give a different kind of experience. A simple website designed in plain HML reminding you of the websites in early 2000s, Ello has a very simple and plain UI. The social network is available on invite-only basis which means you will need an invite from one of your friends before you can go and try out the new social network.

I was invited to Ello by a friend of mine and as long as I registered for an account, I was taken aback. To be honest, the kind of cretivity and features the websites of this generation show, was missing from Ello, but as soon as I read the manifesto of Ello, my view had changed.

The manifesto at Ello reads as below.

Your social network is owned by advertisers.

Every post you share, every friend you make and every link you follow is tracked, recorded and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold.

We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership.



We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce and manipulate — but a place to connect, create and celebrate life.

You are not a product.

By the words written in manifesto, Ello has made it pretty clear that the motto of the social network website is to provide a clean and proper social networking experience to the users without distracting them using advertisements and other elements.

Ello is also in the news because of the features. Unlike Facebook and like twitter, the user can mention other Ello users with the help of an @ symbol, categorize the data using hashtag and add friends in 2 different circles named as Friends and Noise.

Friends and Noise are 2 circles using which you can manage the people in your circle. The users whom you are adding will never get to know about the circle in which you have added him, giving a better way to manage the privacy.

Another thing which Ello has been promoting aggressively is the privacy. There have been a lot of instances where Facebook was under criticism for sharing the user data with the advertisers and that thing has been taken seriously by Ello. On the home page of Ello, just under the manifesto, you can see 2 options, asking if you Agree or Disagree with the points mentioned in the manifesto, and if you click on the Disagree button, it takes you to the Privacy Policy page of Facebook (That’s a cool move I suppose) .
