The Legality of Using iPod Music Transfer Software

Posted on 31. Oct, 2010

The question of whether iPod music transfer software is legal can be confusing. Years ago when the sharing of music on the Internet first became popular, the music industry went into high gear trying to protect copyrights and other rights which they claimed were being infringed upon by sharing music via the Internet. When Apple came on the scene with iTunes, the company built in a feature that prevents a user from copying music from an iPod to another computer in order to prevent sharing.

Apple was very noble in its efforts, but has prevented legitimate uses for moving music from an iPod to another computer. By doing this, though, Apple cut off some legitimate uses of this technique, including being able to restore your iTunes library from an iPod if your computer crashes. Enter the age of the iPod music transfer software, which allows you to do just that.

Prior to iPod music transfer software, you had two options if you needed to move or restore your iTunes library: 1. You could continually back up iTunes on CDs or external hard drives; or 2. You had to reinstall all your CDs onto the computer, assuming you still had them. The back-up method onto hard drives and CDs is only as good as the last time you did it, and you probably weren’t anticipating a crash. An iPod backs up your library every time you plug it into the computer.

Reinstalling your CDs onto the new computer, or after lost in a crash, is extremely time-consuming and assumes you even have the CDs. If you have, the chance that they’ve become scratched is high as well. The easiest and quickest way to back up your iTunes library and transfer it to another computer if necessary is with your iPod using iPod music transfer software.

Music Sharing

As you may have figured, music sharing with your friends and family is possible with iPod music transfer software, and doesn’t always require the use of iTunes. It’s certainly legal to sell the software, and legal to own the software. It’s no different than loaning a CD to a friend to be copied. As long as you are not selling the music copied from an iPod or computer, you’re fine. Most iPod music transfer software uses the ability to share music, videos and more with friends as a selling point.

These software programs are readily available on the Internet and have many cool options and features.
