With the launch of Apple smart watch, it was anticipated that big brands may join hands to make a watch that would win over Apple. The recent news have confirmed that luxury watchmaker TAG Heuer, Tech giants Google and Intel have joined hands to launch a Swiss smartwatch. This announcement was made at the Baselworld, the planet’s biggest watch fair, currently underway in Basel, Switzerland.
At the product launch, the three companies said they are teaming up to “create a product that is both luxurious and seamlessly connected to its wearer’s daily life.” The watch would be designed by TAG Heuer, powered by an Intel processor and run on Android Wear software.
Silicon Valley meets Switzerland. What a great moment!” exclaimed Jean-Claude Biver, president of the watch division LVMH and CEO of TAG Heuer. Along with him, there were two other men – Michael Bell of Intel and David Singleton of Google – at the launch. Bell said, “We believe wearable technology is going to take off but this is not something that can be driven by tech companies alone.” While Singleton said, “the team will bring a unique blend of emotion and innovation to the luxury market.”
In the crowd of smartwatches where every maker is trying to gain a space for themselves, this news makes one feel that even the traditional watchmakers want to infuse their watches with some ‘smart’ features showcase them in the connected, wearable space. The whole segment is dominated by the notifications from phone and fitness monitoring system and the focus is more on the function rather than the form. It would not be long before people start looking for the design and the entry of brands like TAG Heuer would pave the way for the new generation of smart watches that could be par with the classic timepieces that are made to last through generations.
TAG Heuer will not be the only fashionable smart watch competing with Apple. Clothing maker Guess along with a startup Martian Watches, to create a line of fashionable smart watches modeled on Rigor, a traditional watch line from Guess.
The announcement from TAG and Google comes a month before Apple starts selling its smart watch. The smart version of TAG watch is expected to be ready by end of this year. The companies have still not disclosed how it would look like or how much it would cost but it is expected it would $1000 on minimum.
Like most of the smart watches, TAG Heuer’s will also require the smartphone to be close to its wearer for the feature in the watch to function.
