Samsung Gear S vs Sony Smartwatch 3: Detailed comparison

By | September 5, 2014

All the mobile manufacturers have flooded IFA 2014 with Smartwatches. Samsung has came up with Samsung Gear S and it became one of the most interesting wearable for the single reason as it cones with SIM slot, which makes it a standalone wearable. On the other hand Sony has announced third generation Smartwatch Sony Smartwatch 3 and it is the Sony’s first wearable to run on Android Wear platform which means that it offer wide compatibility with Android devices. Here is the comparison of both the smartwatches and lets see which wins the race.

Samsung Gear S vs Sony Smartwatch 3

Design and Display

Samsung Gear S is the curved and rectangular shaped smart watch, which comes with the own SIM slot and in-built GPS. The design of this smartwatch is certainly smart and the OLED screen it features slopes with the curvature of the wrist, but you have something that doesn’t sit definitely on your wrist. It will definitely get you noticed from a group and it makes a statement you have joined smartwatch revolution.

Sony’s SmartWatch 3 features square design which means that it joins the club of LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live smartwatches, rather than Moto 360 and LG G Watch R which came with round faces. The design looks nice and the combination of rubber, metal and plastic work well and it doesn’t look bulky. It’s flat design and no bezel on the sides of the display creates the design which looks shiny on the wrist.

Gear S sports the 2-inch curved AMOLED display with 360×480 pixels resolution, ¬†which has more real estate than the normal Smartwatch have. With its large screen size it would be good to read the RSS feeds, news and more. SmartWatch 3 sports the screen size of 1.6 inch with 320 x 320 pixel resolution. Sony introduced transflective display which allow you to see in the bright sunlight.

Samsung Gear S runs on the Tizen-based wearable platform, whereas SmartWatch 3 runs on Android Wear platform. Gear S is powered by 1.0 GHz Dual-core processor with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal storage. It features the sensors like gyro, proximity, accelerometer, heart rate, compass, UV light and barometer.

Smartwatch 3 is powered by 1.2 GHz Quad ARM, A7 processor with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal storage. It features the sensors like Accelerometer, compass, Ambient light sensors, gyro and GPS.

  • 1.2 GHz Quad ARM A7 processor
  • 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal storage
  • Ambient light sensors, Compass, Gyro, accelerometer and GPS

Both these smartphones are having almost same specifications, but Gear S runs on Tizen and Smartwatch 3 runs on Android Wear OS. My option is Smartwatch 3 for its design but if you want SIM slot in your smartwatch then go for Gear S. Prices of both these wearables are yet to be known.
