Root Google Pixel and Pixel XL on the Latest Nougat Official Firmware

Google is working for the launch of its upcoming Pixel smartphones i.e. Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL. Both these smartphones are getting regular leaks and rumors suggesting some of the specifications. The company has not confirmed any launch date for these phones, however the phones will be announced in the October month. Google has just released its new Android 7.1.2 Nougat Firmware with NJH47F  code. This code can be varies for different nations, however the process for installing the latest Nougat Official Firmware is easy and same. If you are ready to update your device with this latest Android Nougat official Firmware on your Google Pixel or Google Pixel XL Smartphones, following guidelines will help you out with the process.

Basic Requirements :

  • Make sure to take backup of your phone’s important data and files so you can recover them if something went wrong at the end of the process.
  • Make sure proper USB Drivers for Pixel phone is installed on your Computer
  • Unlock Pixel Bootloader on a respective Pixel device
  • A proper Android SDK along with ADB and Fastboot should be there on your PC
  • A proper USB Data cable to connect the phone with the PC
  • Make sure your device is fully charged or at least 70% charged
  • Enable USB debugging : Menu > Settings > Applications from here, navigate to Developer Options and then enable USB Debugging on your phone.

These much things are required in order to update your Pixel smartphone with the latest Android 7.1.2 Nougat Official Firmware. If anything from the above is not installed or done properly, do it before moving on to rooting process with the latest OS on your Pixel device. You can search for anything on Google and can install it on a PC which is required for the Rooting process. Once everything is done perfectly, you have move on to the original Rooting process for upgrading or rooting your existing Pixel or Pixel XL smartphone.

Things to Download before Rooting : 

Download and install Android SDK and make sure to set it up with platform-tools and USB drivers package within the SDK.

Download SuperSU for your Pixel Device.

Download TWRP for your Pixel and Pixel XL smartphone and place the .ZIP file into your phone’s Root Directory.

Download Fastboot for a respective PC system. Once you download this, you have to extract the files to android-sdk-windows/Mac/Linux\platform-tools directory on your PC. You can choose the right path according to your system.

These much things are needed before moving on to the Rooting process. Make sure you download all of the above mentioned items properly and place them to a proper directory mentioned above. After this, following below given guidelines to install Android Nougat on a respective Pixel smartphone.

Root Google Pixel and Pixel XL on the Latest Nougat Official Firmware

Step 1 :

First, you have to connect your Google Pixel or Google Pixel XL Smartphone to the PC by using a proper USB data cable.

Step 2 :

Once the device is connected, you have to copy and drag the SuperSU Zip file to your phone’s Storage Root Folder. This should be done properly as this is the main part of rooting process.

Step 3 :

Now, download the latest TWRP Recovery image for a respective Google Pixel or Google Pixel XL Smartphone. You can get the TWRP files from the following link.

Step 4 :



Once you download it, make sure to save it within the same directory when you have extracted Fastboot and ADB files.

Step 5 :

After this, you have to press the Power button to turn off your Pixel device. You have to be connected with the PC via USB Data cable until the process gets done completely.

Step 6 :

Now, Reboot with Bootloader mode. You can do so by Pressing Volume Down button and Power button together. Once you see something on the display, release both the buttons and you will be on the Bootloader mode of your device. You can navigate with the Volume Rocker button and can select the item by using a Power button.

Step 7 :

Now, go to android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory. Open the Command Prompt Window on your respective system.

Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt

Step 8 :

Once you see the Command Prompt on your desktop, enter Following Command there.

adb reboot bootloader

Your phone will Reboot once and you will be able to get the screen back once the phone is turned on.

Step 9 :

After this, go to android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory and open Command Prompt and enter the following command.

For Pixel : fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-RC1-fastboot-sailfish.img

For Pixel XL : fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-RC1-fastboot-marlin.img

If you use the newer version, just replace twrp-3.0.2-0 with the respective version number.



Step 10 : 

After this, hit the Enter button.

Step 11 :

Your device will be in the TWRP Recovery Mode.

Step 12 :

From the available options, just select the Install button with the use of Volume Rocker and Power button. You have to choose the TWRP Installer file which is already there in the directory.

Step 13 :

At the bottom of the display, you would be asked to Swipe to Confirm Flash option to confirm the installation. Once you do this, the installation process of the latest Firmware will itself take place.

Step 14 :

After this, you have to Reboot your phone with the Recovery Mode once again.

Step 15 :

In the Recovery Mode, you should see Install button. Select this  button and select the SuperSU zip file and Swipe to confirm the process.



Step 16 :

Once the process is done, you will be asked to Reboot your System with an option. Kindly Reboot your system.

You’re done with the Rooting Process. You have successfully updated and rooted your Google Pixel or Google Pixel XL smartphone with the latest Android 7.1.2 Operating System.
