Playful Corp

Founded in 2012, Playful Corp is an independent game studio on a mission to bring joy to the world, one game at a time. Headquartered at Dallas, TX, it was founded by the team behind Words with Friends, Age of Empires and Halo Wars. The startup has its core aim to develop games for Facebook Inc. owned Oculus Rift. It has a long association with Oculus Rift as the company’s co-founder Paul Bettner is a major investor in Oculus which it invested before it was acquired by Facebook.

Till date, Playful Corp has developed around 40 games for Oculus’s virtual reality headset, but it is due to make it big when the actual retail version of the headset hits the market in 2016 by offering a big release for it, a game by the name of Lucky’s Tale. The game is said to have unique features as it doesn’t deliver a first person view within the 3D virtual reality environment, but rather offers a god-like view to its players of Lucky. Lucky runs, jumps, climbs and spins his way through bright, colorful worlds filled with thrilling challenges, wacky creatures, and all the shiny things a little fox could ever want!” Apart from the game development, Playful is developing Creativerse, a next-generation sandbox adventure that is now available through early access on Steam.

In a statement Bettner said, “We are inspired by Snow White, by Toy Story, by Mario. These  beloved stories and characters share something in common: technology made them possible. Motion pictures, CG characters, interactive video games — these advances enabled fundamentally new levels of empathy and audience connection. We founded Playful to carry on this tradition.”

With the fresh funds, Playful plans to invest in boosting the development of original IP for cutting edge platforms. It is also seeking world-class game makers and bright new talent to strengthen its team. The studio is well-known for its good industry-leading compensation, an uncompromising work-life balance, phenomenal benefits and a flat management structure.
