After the sale of its mobile manufacturing unit Microsoft, Nokia is now free to do whatever it want with its other services, including its powerful Here maps service. Today Nokia has made an announcement that Samsung Galaxy users will soon be able to download the Here maps for Android OS. It also added that Here maps will be available to other Android devices by the end of this year.
The launch of the Nokia Here maps for Android devices of Samsung is an extension of the Nokia’s agreement with the Samsung to offer the services for its own OS based Tizen devices. Nokia is also working to make the service available to the Amazon and Jolla, the Finnish startup company working on Sailfish Operating System.
Nokia’s Here is the best competitor for Google Maps and in some cases it claims to be better than Google Maps. The main thing which makes the Here popular is that it features the true offline maps, which means that you don’t need to cache the certain regions beforehand like you need to do with Google Maps. You can simply download the maps of an entire country or any specific for free. This feature makes Here very popular and useful when travelling in the regions where there is no network.
Nokia’s Here is the feature rich map which offers most of the bells and whistles, while the Google Maps has the advantage over Nokia’s Here maps of the wider street view and the more comprehensive global maps coverage as well. Here Maps app work nicely on the Samsung’s newly launched Gear S smartwatch, as you can send the location to the Gear S and use it for the navigation without the need of smartphone.
Here maps is set to hit the Google Play Store when Gear S become available in stores, which is expected in few weeks.
