List of best startups acquired by Google

Google has been acquiring more than one company on an average per week since 2010. Google till now has acquired more than 170 companies and Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion is the largest acquisition till date, but this is again acquired by Lenovo. Most of the companies acquired by Google are based in United States, in fact most of these are based in San Francisco, Bay area. Here is the list of few companies that are acquired by Google.

1. Songza


Songza is the free music streaming and recommendation service for internet users in Canada and United States. Songza has been acquired by Google on 1st July 2014, but terms were not disclosed but the speculation of the price expected between $15 million and $39 million. Following the acquisition in October 2014, the Google Play Music all access service was updated to include the functionality adapted from Songza’s Concierge system.

2. Dropcam


Dropcam Inc, American company headquartered in San Francisco, California and it is known for Wi-Fi video streaming cameras and Dropcam Pro, which let the people to view live feeds through its Dropcam’s cloud based service. On June 20, 2014 it was acquired by Google’s Nest labs for $555 million USD.

3. Skybox Imaging


Skybox Imaging is the company providing the commercial high-resolution satellite imagery with the high definition video and analytics services headquartered in Mountain view, California. It is founded by Julian Mann, Dan Berkenstock, Ching-Yu Hu and John Fenwick in 2009. By April 2012 Skybox has raised the total of $91 million of private capital from Bessemer Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, Canaan Ventures and Norwest Venture partners. On June 2014 Skybox has announced that it has been acquired by Google for $500 million.

4. Quest Visual


Quest Visual Inc, is the American company based in San Francisco, California which develops an augmented reality translation called Word Lens. Its first product Word Lens 1.0 was released on December 2010 and now its current version Word Lens 1.0.1 is available for iPhone 4, iPad 2 and iPod Touch. The company has also planned to expand to other devices Windows Phone , Android and other platforms. In May 2014 Google has acquired Quest Visual.

5. Stackdriver


Stackdriver is the cloud computing systems management company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. It has been founded by Dan Belcher and Izzy Azeri in 2012 and it visualizes application, system and infrastructure metrics and also provides the policy system to alert the users when predefined threshold are breached. Bain capital ventures has invested $5 million in 2012 and they entered public beta in April 2013. Google has acquired stackdriver in May 2014.

6. Slick Login


Slick Login is an Israeli based startup company which develops sound based password alternatives. It is founded by Or Zelig, Eran Galili and Ori Kabeli. In February 2014 Google has acquired this company, but however details of the deal were not disclosed. Slick Login is yet to launch the commercial product, so this deal actually represents an acquisition of the technology itself.

7. DeepMind technologies


DeepMind Technologies is the British artificial intelligence company and its latest achievement is the creation of neural network which learns how to play some video games in the similar way as humans. It was founded in 2011 by UCL Alumni, Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg and they were joined by Mustafa Suleyman. On January 2014, Google announced that it agreed to acquire DeepMind technologies for $650 million.

8. Impermium


Impermium is the cyber-security start up company headquartered in Redwood City, California which provides anti-spam and the account protection services for Internet websites. It is founded in 2010 by Vishwanath Ramarao, Mark Risher and Naveen Jamal. Till now the company has protected more than 1.5 million websites world wide which includes Sqaurespace, Disqus, Livefyre, Pinterest and Tumblr from attacks including fraudulent registrations, login and account highjacking. In January 2014, Google has announced the acquisition of this company.

9. Nest Labs


Nest Labs is the home automation company based in Palo Alto, California which designs and manufactures sensor-driven, Wi-Fi enabled, programmable thermostats, Wi-Fi enabled and smoke detectors. It is founded by Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers in 2010 and quickly grew to have more than 130 employees by 2012 end. On January 2014, Google has acquired this company for $3.2 billion and it left nest labs to use its own brand.

10. Boston Dynamics


Boston Dynamics is an engineering and robotics which is known for the development of BigDog, which is the quadruped robot that is designed for the US military with the funding from Defense advanced research projects agency and DI-Guy software for the realistic human simulation. On December 2013, Google has acquired this company where it will be managed by Andy Rubin.
