Founded in 2005, HomeAway is a vacation rental marketplace with over 1000,000 vacation stay rental listings in 190 countries with a team of 1588 employees. Mid this year, Dwellable launched a new app whose signature user interface innovations was a swipe-and-sort user experience which is very much alike Tinder, the famous dating app. It’s design took over the industry’s standard ‘results list’ with a card-swiping feature that it argues is more intuitive on mobile handsets. The calendar feature that helps in comparing the vacancies has also been innovative.

Further to the acquisition, HomeAway plans to make use of the Dwellable team and mobile app technology while rolling down the shutters of Dwellable’s vacation rental app and website. It is also likely adopt some of these UX perks as it brings on board six team members from Dwellable. Regarding the acqusition, Brian Sharples, CEO and co-founder of HomeAway said, “The Dwellable team has built an incredible product with an impressive and growing base of travelers who use the app to book vacation rentals,” says HomeAway Co-founder and CEO Brian Sharples. “With 48 percent of travelers coming to HomeAway from mobile devices (2), it’s important for us to continue improving our mobile experience, with an even stronger emphasis on functionality and design for the traveler. Dwellable will help us take that next step.”

Tom Hale COO of HomeAway  said, ” Dwellable created search functionality and a mobile experience that is truly unique, with features such as swiping left or right to curate a list of vacation rentals. The app is loved by travelers, and has better ratings in the app store than anyone in the industry.”  He also added, “As we work to improve the HomeAway traveler experience and focus on mobile conversion, we think  Dwellable’s technology will be very useful. Likewise, it was built by a very talented team that we’re excited to have join us at HomeAway.”

HomeAway is not new to acquisitions for it has made around 20 acquisitions in the past decade. Just prior to Dwellable, it acquired Glad to Have You app for $16.8 million in March last year.
