What to Do if You Forgot Your MacBook Password?

You won’t be logged on, can’t install any applications, can’t make any changes to system preferences. If you’ve lost your Password or Somehow you’ve forgotten it, you don’t need to be worry about it as we are here with a proper solution and guidelines to recover and setup a new Password on your MacBook.

Mac OS X is a complete secure Operating System and doesn’t allow anyone to install any kind of app or deleting anything from your system without the Password. So, it is mandatory to keep your MacBook’s Password known to you in order to install or delete software from the system. There are a number of ways to get your MacBook Password recovered. Recover MacBook Password with Password Hint

This is the easiest way to recover your MacBook’s Password. If you’ve forgotten your current MacBook Password, there is an option called Hint to select, by selecting this option you will get a hint of your lost Password so you can make a guess and recover it back. Fortunately, you can make guesses as many times as you want, there is no limit on the hints for Passwords. Once you enter wrong Password three times, MacOS will offer you a Hint to recover your Password. So, you can test out your memory and can guess the right Password with a proper hint.

You can even manually get the hint by following below given steps on your MacBook :

Step 1 :

Open System Preferences. You can open this by clicking on the Apple logo at the left upper corner or your can select the Applications from the Dock and then click on to the System Preferences option.

Step 2 :

From here, you need to choose Users and Groups option.

Step 3 :

Here, you would see Lock icon in the bottom-left corner. Just click on to it.

Step 4 :

Here, you need to enter Back Key for three times so system will understand that you have entered a wrong password for three times.

Probably, you would see a hint below the Password, here you can enter your Password as many times as you want and the system will not lock down your system permanently. So, you can make attempts for your Password from here with the provided hint.

If for some reason, you don’t see any hints, it’s probably you have not setup this option to your login section. Just follow below given path on your system and you will be able to get hints after that. You have to enable this option in order to get hints for your next times.

Go to : System Preferences >> Users & Groups >> Login Options

In the Login Options section, you would see an option, show password hints, here you have to select the Tickmark to enable this option.

Switch to different account and change Password

The second way to recover or change the existing forgotten Password on your MacBook is by switching on to different account from your system. This is the most convenient way to change your MacBook’s Password. In order to do so, you have to follow a few steps given below.

Step 1 :

Click on to the Apple logo at the upper left corner of the display. The last option you would see is the Log Out option.



Step 2 :

Now, here you would see another Account that you might want to login to.

Step 3 :

Select the account and login to that Account from here.

Step 4 :

Again, open System Preferences and then select Users & Groups option.

Step 5 :

Again, click the Lock icon.

Step 6 :

Enter your Password again.

Step 7 :

In the sidebar, you would see the Account of which you have forgotten the Password.

Step 8 :

You would see an option, Reset Password here.

Step 9 :



You will be able to enter a new Password for that account. Make sure to tickmark to the hint for this Password.

Step 10 :

At last, you would see Click Change Password option.

You’ve successfully changed the Password for your account of which you’ve forgotten the Password. Now, you can go back to that account and can login to it by entering the Password and other required fields. This is how you can get back your account’s Password.

Make use of Recovery Mode for your MacBook 

MacOS allows users to switch to Recovery Mode if you have forgotten your Password and not able to get it recovered from there. This is the best solution to recover your MacBook Password.

Step 1 :

Click on the Apple logo at the upper left corner and then select the Shut Down option to turn off your MacBook completely.

Step 2 :

Keep on pressing the Power button and hold down the Command-R keys. By doing so, your MacBook will turn on with the Recovery Mode. This is the same way as we put an Android Smartphone to its recovery mode by pressing the Volume Down and Power Key together. Here, you need to press Power button+ Command-R button together for a few seconds.

Step 3 :

From here, select Disk Utility and then click on to Continue option.

Step 4 :

You would see Utilities option here, select it out and then select the Terminal option.

Step 5 :

Here, you need to enter a command. Enter “resetpassword” and then press Return button.

Step 6 :

Here, you need to select the drive where your Password was saved. This might be your main hard drive. So select the option from here.

Step 7 :

Here, you would see Select the Account option. Make sure to select the Account of which you’ve forgotten the Password.

Step 8 :

You will be able to enter a new Password for your selected account. Enter a new Password and re-enter it back to verify your new Password.

Step 9 :

Make sure you tick mark the hint password option as well. So, you will get the hint of your Password whenever you forgot it once again.

Step 10 :

At last, click on to the Save button.

Step 11 :

You would see a warning that, the Password of the account has been changed. You just need to click on to the Ok button to do so.

Step 12 :

Now, again, you need to click on to the Apple logo and Shut down your system once again.

Step 13 :



Restart your MacBook normally by pressing on to the Power button.

You’re done! Your Password for this account has now been changed with a new Password. You will be able to login to your account with a new Password which you have just reset.
