By | July 23, 2014

Dell XPS 13 comes refreshed and keeps all its best machine qualities like beautiful display and glossy design, keyboard and the vibrant display. With the new refreshed version performance and features are added to make it as a top tier ultra book. The main drawback with the old XPS 13 ultra book was it lacks in the performance, but this refreshed version may be worth a look. it comes with the starting price tag of $1299.  Lets look at its new features and specifications.

Design and Display

Dell XPS 13 is upgraded with some hardware feature, but its design is almost same to its previous model. It has attractive and sleek curved design and covered with the aluminum back and features the Dell logo in the center. The metallic coat covering the back offers a cool textured feel with easy grip and offers an attractive and understated blaze. The aluminum lid opens to reveal the back, soft touch deck which makes you to easily type on the notebook’s island keys. Like XPS 15 it also features a carbon fiber inside with a checkerboard pattern.

Its dimensions are 12.4 x 8.1 x 0.7 inches and weighs around 3.3 pounds and feel light in your hands. Both the chassis and base held firm to the heavy pressure with no ripples appear on the screen. It features the FHD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution and come with full touch compatibility. Touch enabled screen is the welcomed addition and the touch screen registers gestures and swipes without delay.

Ports and Webcam

It has the attractive thin curvaceous design, it allows only few ports to be placed along its sides. On the left side there is one USB 3.0 port, power input and headphone jack. Whereas on the right side you can find Kensington lock, mini display port and additional USB 3.0 ports. We can expect the expulsion of Ethernet port with ultra book, but omission of SD card reader is difficult to swallow. It sports a 720P webcam which is decent for video chatting, but you can’t expect high quality pics with this.

 Keyboard and Touchpad

Despite of its sleek design XPS 13 features spacious island style keyboard which makes typing breeze on this device. Concave shaped keys keep our finger comfortable throughout the long typing sessions. Travel distance of the keys is excellent with 0.7″ thickness. It features smooth 4 x 2.5 inch touchpad has the small and grey line separating the right and left click buttons. It is quite responsive and helpful in cases like zoom into the pictures and useful particularly for Windows 8.1 OS and easy to perform the Windows 8.1 gestures like shuffling through the active apps and pulling the charm menu.

The biggest change change for the latest version from its previous version comes from its upgraded hardware. Especially its jump to the fourth generation Intel processors gives the boost to the overall performance and battery life. It is powered by 4th generation 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5-4210U processor paired with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB Solid State Drive. Equipped with the Core i5 processor it makes the quick work of the normal word processing and web functions. With its 8 GB RAM it is capable of handling the more complex Microsoft Office tasks.

It packs the Intel HD Graphics 4000 Graphics driver with allows to handle the basic visual tasks like editing the HD videos, playing less demanding game titles on the lowered graphical settings. With its 128 GB Hard drive it doesn’t offer great deal of storage but it is very fast as well as responsive. With the improved hardware specifications the overall performance of XPS 13 is increased compared to its previous versions.

In a certain battery test Dell XPS 13 stood up for 5 hours and 5 minutes and used in the test used the new PowerMark in the balanced mode. It consists of the combination of the automated web browsing, gaming, word processing and video playback workloads. It is offering the exceptional battery than the previous years XPS 13 which lasted for more than just three hours.
