By | July 23, 2014

Dell Inspiron 15 5000 lies in the middle of the Dell family notebooks and features sleek and attractive design and but with the moderate specifications. It is available for the price of $649 which is just higher than the average notebook. It is powered by fourth generation Intel Core i5 processor an comes in both touch and non touch variants.

While the Inspiron 15 5000 big brother Inspiron 15 7000 series resemble the striking design of the Macbook, Dell went in the different direction with the design of the Inspiron 15 5000. In the exterior the metal lid has the brushed finish and in the interior it features the smooth mettle black finish while the Insprion 15 7000 comes with the aluminium case. The overall design is attractive and the user feels comfortable.

The bezel around the display looks somewhat cheaper and it also has an additional plastic strip in the 5000 series, between the lid and the edge of the screen which gives the display bulky experience. The dimensions are 14.9 x 10 x 0.9 inches and it weighs around 5.4 pounds which is lighter and smaller than its competitors.

Display and Touchscreen

It is available in both the non touch and touch screen variants and it features a 15.6 inch display with 1920 x 1080 IPS touch screen. It’s screen brightness averaged 244 lux and it is bit behind the ASUS N550JV. The touch screen is responsive and it is quite easy for the untrained fingers to operate. It can also recognize the various touch gestures of Windows 8. You may feel irritated when swiping to the right to summon the charms menu due to it’s layered bezel.

Keypad and Touchpad

It includes the 104 keys chiclet style keyboard, but the keys on the number pad are somewhat shrunken. It has the comfortable key travel of 1.55 mm and the user feel more comfortable when typing. Coming to the touchpad it is spacious with 4.1 x 3.1 inches making the user feel comfortable with the left and the right mouse buttons integrated in Macbook style. Sometimes it faces the trouble of recognizing the left and right clicks when pressed in the middle of the pad. Multi touch gesture feature like two finger pan and scroll were very easy to use.

Ports and Webcam

Ports packed in the Inspiron 15 5000 are standard for the 15 inch laptop. It contains three USB ports in total. One is USB 2.0 which is present next to the power input and Memory card reader on the left side and on the right side there are two USB 3.0 ports are present along with headset jack, Ethernet connector and HDMI input.

It features the HD webcam which can take the adequate photos of 1280 x 720 pixels and the videos look slightly dark both this decently enough for making the video calls.

It houses the stereo speakers which are located on the front side of the laptop and audio output is crisp and clear. The laptop includes the Dell’s own MAXX Audio Pro Utility which let the users to save their own settings, adjust the boost treble, bass, EQ and other audio categories.

Coming to the hardware chipset it features the fourth generation 2 GHz Intel Core i7-4510 processor coupled with 16 GB RAM along with 1 TB 5400 RPM hard drive and can able to stream 1080P videos from YouTube with more tabs opened at the same time. It includes the Intel HD 4400 graphics card which can handle the less graphical intense games. With the powerful processor and the decent RAM size we can expect good performance from this device.

It packs the 3-cell 43 WHr Lithium ion battery and it the battery life is very disappointing and it lasts for 5 hours and 4 minutes when continuously browsed the web. So you need to definitely carry charger in the bag.
