Dell Inspiron 14 5000 : Review and Specifications

By | July 22, 2014

Dell splits its Inspiron series laptops into three categories, the entry level 3000 series, mainstream 5000 series and the Deluxe 7000 series. The 5000 series laptops comes with more advanced features than 3000 series laptops, but don’t have the advanced features of Deluxe Inspiron 7000. Dell Inspiron 14 5000 is the smallest and less expensive laptop from Dell and is portable and packs strong mix of components. It comes with price tag of $599 (up to $749 as configured)

Inspiron 14 5000 looks pretty stylish for the Notebook in this price range and it features smooth and mattle-black finish inside. Its lid has the nice-brushed metal finish and everybody will like how the front edge tapers upward. It is very strongly built with well fitting joints and very stiff axis. The dimensions are 13.5″ x 9.7″ x 0.9″ and weighs around 4.6 pounds. The side panel and the bottom plate which is covering the battery is plastic and is highlighted with the silver paint.

Display and Touch Screen

We can expect better display for this price, but Inspiron 14 5000 disappoints with its low 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. Contrast is alos an issue here and only nice thing about the display is that it offers the good viewing angles both vertically and horizontally. In terms of brightness it is better than its counterparts ASUS Vivo Book V451 LA and Toshiba Satellite E45T.

Coming to the Touch screen, touch gestures are responsive for Windows 8.1 and very easy to use. But the bad thing there is the thick bezel between the case and the display and it creates the speed bump for the gestures near the screen edge.

Keyboard and Touchpad

It features the full size and water resistant keyboard with the two levels of backlighting and can be toggled with the function keys. The keys have good feel when typing and with an actuation weight of 55 grams and key length of 1.3 mm. Coming to the touch pad it is not as responsive as keyboard. But multi-touch gestures are useful for scrolling and zooming but right and left click s didn’t always register.

It features the stereo speakers which you can find on the front side of the laptop. The audio performance is rated as above average and there is a bit distortion in the bass and overall the audio quality is quite impressive for this range of machine. the sound systme also includes the MAXX audio pro sound utility feature which can be used to adjust the bass, EQ and treble. It has also presets for the different listening modes like Music, Movies, Voice and custom settings.

Inspiron 14 5000 features 4th generation 1.9 GHz Intel core i3-4030U processor/ 2.7 GHz Intel core i5-4210U processor. It features 8 GB RAM and 1 TB hard disk promising good performance. 1080p videos can be streamed without trouble at the same time even multiple tabs open in your browser.

Ports and Webcam

This device features the standard set of ports, on the left side it has only one USB 2.0 port between the power jack and two-in-one Memory stick/SD card reader. On the right side there are two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and Ethernet ports and headset jack. It has a 720 p camera and the pics and videos taken on it are grainy, especially on the faces.

It features Intel HD 4400 graphics card which cannot handle many of the graphically intense programs but it is enough for doing the job of photo editing and more.

On the laptop mag battery test continuously browsing the internet over Wi-Fi at 100 nits the battery lasted for mediocre 5 hours and 45 minutes. So you need to definitely carry charger along with you if you are leaving the house.
