Crayon Data – Leaping towards growth in Big Data world. Recently we are witnessing a lot of actions can be seen in Indian Big Data scene. Chennai based Crayon Data was founded in 2012 by Suresh Shankar, I Vijay Kumar and Srikant Sastri. The company aims to build a platform based Big Data venture that challenges conventional people led model of analytics, delivers real business solutions by bringing together enterprise, public, external internet and social data on a single platform.

To fulfil this aim, Crayon Data offers two products – Simpler Choices and One Drop Analytics. Simpler Choices has been developed on a platform with combinations of graph mining, affinity analysis, trust propagation, topic modelling, collaborative filtering, context discovery and prediction models.

Simpler Choices powered by four search engines which provide data on customer choices. The taste engine uses blend of formal graph theory based techniques, stochastic models and distributed computing domain driven heuristic methods. The influence engine has two main modules of inferring influence and understanding the propagation of influence and trust. The behaviour engine works with streams of enterprise data like transaction data and profile data from enterprises, supported by instrumentation data and social media data. The context data helps prioritising choices based on intent. Parameters like Location, time, weather, accompaniment and channel of delivery of choices.


One Drop Analytics is another platform created by Crayon Data, assists business on B2B sales and marketing intelligence. Demand generation by providing deep insights on companies and markets.

Suresh Shankar has rich entrepreneurial experience, before setting up Crayon Data. He was marketing Vice President at ABN AMRO. Later he founded RedPill Solutions Pte Ltd which was subsequently acquired by IBM. He was Analytics Director of IBM for some time. He graduated from Indian Institute of Calcutta in 1985, did his Bachelor of Commerce from Loyola College, Chennai.

Srikant Sastri is a seasoned entrepreneur has diverse experience in various fields. He had started his career with Unilever looking Ponds worked as regional sales manager, worked as Account Director with Tara Sinha Associates. He later founded Team4U, the company was into sales force staffing, later acquired by Randstad. For 15 years he headed Solutions Integrated Marketing Services as Managing Director. The company is a subsidiary of Paris based Publicis Groupe SA. Later he became Chairperson of Vivaki which is strategic entity created by Publicis Groupe SA.


He helped to Publicis Groupe to dominate the digital media by assisting the company to acquire 3 companies viz., Resultrix, Convonix and Neev Technologies. Srikant Sastri is founder director of Growth for All, a company which revolves around inclusive growth of various strata of society. In 2013, he with Suresh Shankar and I Vijay Kumar founded Crayon Data and he is lead investor.

Srikant Sastri has done his post graduation in digital marketing from Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. He is an engineering graduate from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.
Crayon Data works on SaaS based revenue model, clients pay subscription fee towards deployment of the platform on monthly basis. Fees can be decided on the various criteria’s like number of hotel rooms or number of shoppers etc. The company is focusing on hospitals, finance, retail and technology verticals.

Crayon Data has received 3 rounds of funding from 3 investors for total of $5.3 million. In July 2013, the company received Angel funding of $2.8 million and followed another round of funding by angel investors Ravi Thakran and Ravi Mantha for $1.4 million in September 2013. Ravi Thakran is the Chief Executive Officer of L Capital Asia and LVMH Asia Pacific. Ravi Mantha is the president of TiE Singapore. Other participants like William Bissell of Fabindia, Meng Wong co founder of Joyful Frog Digital Incubator from Singapore and Ernest Pomerantz, Chairman of Stonewater Capital also participated in funding. Jungle Ventures invested $1.2 million as Venture Capital in February 2014.


In 2014 Mindshare tied up with Crayon Data in Asia Pacific region to improvise their planning and consultancy offering. Crayon assisted Mindshare to focus on developing adaptive marketing by creating an ability to identify different consumer profiles and segments. The company assisted in targeting and tracking those profiles across various media channels.

Crayon Data has been recognised and awarded on various global platforms like IBM Watson Mobile Developer Challenge, CeBIT 2014 and TiE Silicon Valley. The company is one of the finalists in Code_n Awards in Germany.

The company has more than 10 customers includes mid size hotel chain in UK, a multinational bank in Singapore and various lifestyle and fashion retailers in India. The company is earning more than $500,000 in revenue and projecting more than $600,000 for the current financial year.
