Some mobile features like voice control Siri can be used by visual impairments, as they can control the device by their voice and can send texts using text to speech features. Till now touch screen is not any gadgets visual impairments people would have thought of purchasing, as it doesn’t fulfill their requirements because they can’t see the features and images. But now they can use the smart watch with touch screen features as Braille smartwatch will allow them to read the texts and can access digital information.

A South Korean startup has developed a Braille smartwatch named Dot, which is affordable and can be used to read text messages and even e books. Eric Ju Yoon Kim, the CEO of Dot said to Tech in Asia, “Until now, if you got a message on iOS from your girlfriend, for example, you had to listen to Siri read it to you in that voice, which is impersonal. Wouldn’t you rather read it yourself and hear your girlfriend’s voice saying it in your head?”

Dot is a wearable device, which comes with four cells of six actively shifting dots, which can make four Braille letters at one time by rising and falling. This smartwatch will deliver real-time information by touch by using haptic technology. The user can connect their smartwatch to phones by Bluetooth 4.0, which will further convert the texts from phones to Braille character. It will alert the user about the notification via vibration. So the visual impairments people can use this watch for reading e books as well as getting info about the directions.

The battery life of Dot is of 10 hours, but According to Kim, the watch will lasts for five days for average usage on one charge.

Now in today’s market, the smartwatch business has been growing all thanks to Apple Watch, so this new smart watch for visual impairments makes sense, as according to WHO (World Health Organization), there are 285 million people living with severe visual impairments and 39 million people qualify for legally blind category.

The main plus point for this smart watch is its price, as it costs less than $300, which is much less than usual Braille device costing more than thousand dollars. The goal of Dot is to make more reliable and affordable device for visual impairments, which can be used for normal daily works and some educational purpose also.

This Dot smart watch will be available for December, as Dot will launch 10,000 Dot watch in this December.
