Aricent acquires SmartPlay - Main Feature 1Aricent Inc acquires Smart Play for $180 M. Bengaluru based Smart Play is one of the leading chip design company in India. This is one of the biggest acquisition by US-based Aricent Inc. in the semiconductor space in India.



With this acquisition, Aricent plans to accelerate its R & D in embedded software and high potential space of internet of things (IoT). Aricent was earlier known as Hughes Software, acquired by Flextronics International. The company was later acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co and named it as Aricent. Aricent has 10,000+ engineers on its roll of which 9,000 are in India. The company design centers in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Noida, San Jose, San Diego, Austin and Singapore.

SmartPlay’s acquisition by Aricent has catapulted the company into the top position in the semiconductor business. The acquisition will deepen diversification strategy across nine industries such as telecommunications, networking, consumer electronics, industrial automation, semiconductor, automotive, internet services, consumer electronics, media and entertainment.



Aricent acquires SmartPlay - Main Feature 2SmartPlay is one of the India’s fastest growing semiconductor company founded by Pradeep Vajram in 2008, after selling his company Spike Technologies bought by Qualcomm for $20 million in 2004. He is a veteran in the semiconductor industry has executed design and development of semiconductor products at various levels.



SmartPlay has offices in India, Germany, Singapore and the US. The employee strength of the company stands at 1,200. SmartPlay served 80% of the top 20 semiconductor companies in India. They have received the Mentor Graphics Leadership Award for Best Electronics Design Startup. The company is one of the top employers in 2015 Great Places to work survey in India.

SmartPlay’s Chief Executive Officer, Pradeep Vajram will assume the role of President, Aricent’s Semiconductor business unit and will report to Aricent’s Chief Executive Officer Frank Kern. Pradeep Vajram said after the acquisition “Joining Aricent is a great cultural fit for the SmartPlay team, given our shared belief in high-quality, high-value product engineering services.”  He further added “We can now deliver a more powerful proposition to clients across industries that need smart silicon and embedded software to accelerate their R&D initiatives.”
